Serious question, did anyone know Plan 9's flying saucers were pie tins on strings?
I've been hosting a bad movie night at my place in Sacramento for about two years now, mostly 90s junk and cheap horror, but last Friday I finally put on Plan 9 from Outer Space and my buddy pulled up the trivia on his phone halfway through. Turns out the saucers were literally pie tins hanging from visible strings, and Ed Wood just left them in the shot because he didn't have the budget to fix it. I always figured the wobble was some kind of cheap effect trick, not actual bakeware from someone's kitchen. My girlfriend laughed so hard she had to pause it when I pointed at the string during the graveyard scene. Back when I first saw this movie in college I thought it was just poorly made, but now knowing the pie tin thing makes it way funnier to me. It's like the movie is showing you its own shoestring budget on purpose. What other classics have a prop detail like that I'm missing, because I want to blow my crew's minds next week?
