My neighbor Carol said my chocolate chip cookies tasted 'store bought' and I still can't decide if that was a compliment
She said it at her daughter's birthday party in April, right after I watched her eat three of them in a row, which made the whole thing more confusing. So now I'm stuck on two sides of a real argument: should a homemade cookie taste like a bakery cookie, or should it taste like your kitchen, butter smeared on the pan, slightly uneven edges, a little crunch where the dough hit the sheet first? I bake the polished kind on purpose because I think a consistent cookie is a skill, but part of me wonders if Carol was telling me I got the recipe right or telling me I lost the soul of it. If someone calls your baking store bought, do you take that as a win or a small insult?

My buddy Dave got the same comment from his mother in law about his ribs at a cookout in June, and he took it as a badge of honor since she meant they tasted like a restaurant. Carol ate three, so she was happy.
