Warning: my KitchenAid mixer gear finally gave out after 8 years

I was making a double batch of chocolate chip cookies last Saturday when my mixer started making this grinding noise. Then it just STOPPED mid mix. I thought I burned out the motor but turns out it was a stripped plastic gear inside. I read online that a replacement costs like $20 and takes 30 minutes but I was SO mad because I had to finish mixing by hand with a wooden spoon. My cookies turned out uneven and I lost about an hour of my afternoon. Has anyone here replaced that gear themselves or should I just bite the bullet and take it to a repair shop?

Man, I felt every word of this. My mixer did the exact same thing last year mid batch of sugar cookies. Threw dough everywhere and I had to finish by hand too, which was a disaster. I looked up the plastic gear fix and honestly it's not that hard if you've got a screwdriver and a little patience. There's a guy on YouTube who walks through the whole thing step by step in like 12 minutes. I bought the metal replacement gear online for $18 instead of the plastic one, figured it's worth the extra few bucks. Took me maybe 45 minutes because the old gear was stuck on there good. Saved myself the $80 repair shop quote and now I feel like a hero whenever I use it. Do it yourself, just watch the video a couple times first.

Oh man, that metal gear swap is the way to go. I did the same thing and it's been running smooth for like two years now. Did you have any trouble getting the old grease off inside or was yours pretty clean?
