My neighbor said 5 gallon buckets were too deep for balcony carrots, and she was dead wrong
When I moved into this third floor spot in Pilsen last spring, the lady two doors down told me carrots need at least 12 inches of loose soil or they'd come out stubby and forked. I ignored her and packed three 5 gallon buckets with a sand and compost mix anyway, and by August I pulled a dozen straight 6 inch Nantes out of each one. So now I'm wondering if depth matters less than people say as long as the mix stays loose, or did I just get lucky with this one variety?
