PSA: a barber in Dallas said to skip the hot towel on my razor bumps, I ignored him for 2 months
He said the heat was opening the pores and making the irritation worse, and after 8 weeks of stubbornly doing it my way my neck finally cleared up the week I quit. Any of you run into advice from an old timer that sounded wrong but wasn't?
Had the same thing happen with my barber Marcus down in Oak Cliff about 3 years back. He told me to stop steaming my face before shaving because the heat makes the hairs swell up and lay flat, so the blade catches them at a weird angle and you get ingrowns. I figured he was just old and set in his ways but I gave it a shot with cold water rinses instead and my jawline stopped looking like a war zone in about a month. The other thing he told me was to shave with the grain on the first pass no matter what, and to wipe the blade with alcohol between strokes instead of rinsing it under the sink. Sounds like extra work but it takes like 5 seconds and it cut way down on the redness for me.
