Switched from Steam sales to checking Epic's free games every Thursday and saved about $200 this year

I used to wait for the big Steam summer and winter sales, grab a bunch of stuff 50% off and think I was killing it. Then around February I started grabbing the free games Epic gives away each week. Half the time it's random junk I never play, but I got Control, GTA V, and a few other big titles for zero dollars. Now I just check the Epic store every Thursday morning before I hit the road. Has anyone else found better deals just taking the freebies instead of hunting discounts?

Control was the one that got me hooked too, I never would have bought it but ended up putting 40 hours into it. The trick is to claim everything even if you think you won't play it, because your taste might change or you might get bored one weekend. You just have to remember to actually install and start them before they expire from your library.

Ha, I gotta disagree with you a bit @ellis.victor. I used to claim everything too but my library got so bloated I couldn't find anything. Ended up with like 200 games I'd never touch and just got stressed looking at them. I had to force myself to stop claiming stuff unless I was actually gonna play it within a week or two. Feels way better having a smaller backlog I can actually manage.

Used to think Felix had the right idea and only claimed games I knew I'd play. But then I grabbed something random one night and found a hidden gem I put 30 hours into. Now I just claim everything and treat my library like a big pile of stuff I can dig through when I'm bored. Works way better for me.
