I thought a monitor arm was just a gimmick until my neck gave out

After 2 years hunched over a stack of textbooks at my desk, I woke up one morning last week and couldn't turn my head to the left without sharp pain. My wife said I looked like a praying mantis trying to read the screen. I finally caved and spent $45 on a basic arm from Amazon, and now my eyes are actually level with the top of the monitor. Has anyone else dealt with neck issues from a DIY setup that was way too low?

Desk height matters just as much as the arm though.

My chiropractor told me 80% of desk neck problems come from people treating their chair height as a suggestion. Spent a year blaming my mattress before I realized my monitor was literally 8 inches below my natural sight line. It is funny how we will drop a hundred bucks on a new mouse but act like a $45 arm is some kind of luxury.

Thats the truth right there. People will spend crazy money on a fancy mouse or keyboard but act like a simple monitor arm is some kind of crazy upgrade. I had the same problem for years with my neck hurting and it turned out my monitor was just sitting too low on the stock stand. A basic adjustable arm fixed it in like ten minutes and cost less than two bags of groceries. We really do ignore the simple fixes and blame everything else first.
