Went from hiding every cable under a desk skirt to zip tying them to the wall, still not sure which one looks worse
Six months ago my setup was in a Los Angeles apartment with a gray fabric skirt velcroed around the whole desk, so nobody saw the mess and nobody saw the desk. Then I moved to a place with a glass top desk and suddenly every cord was on display, so I bought 200 zip ties, a roll of velcro, and one of those raceway channels off Amazon for $28. Now the back of my desk looks like a highway map, all the cables run straight down one leg and it's honestly kind of satisfying. My roommate says it looks like a server room and a prison had a baby, and he's not wrong. The skirt side says hide it all and never think about it, the zip tie side says own the mess and make it look on purpose. Which one are you, and did you ever go back after switching?
The part about it looking like "a server room and a prison had a baby" is funny but I don't agree that the zip tie look is the worse one. Hiding stuff behind a skirt just means you never deal with it, and every time you need to swap a cable you're crawling around on the floor untangling a mess you can't even see. With the cables run down one leg you can actually see what goes where, so when something dies you just follow the line and pull it. A prison had a baby with a server room sounds bad but at least that baby is organized and you can fix it in two minutes. The skirt is just lying to yourself and to anyone who visits. I never went back once I could see everything.
