Filled my 10th bag of the year at Ocean Beach and did the math on how much of it was straws
I do a solo walk at Ocean Beach in San Francisco every Saturday morning before the crowds show up, and last weekend I tied off bag number 10 for the year. That number caught me off guard because I only started in January and I figured I'd do maybe five all year. What got me though was the count I did on that last bag. Out of roughly 130 items, 41 were straws and 38 were those little plastic wrappers from straws, all from the same coffee stand near the parking lot. I sat there on a log sorting them into piles like a weirdo and just stared at it. So I walked over and talked to the guy working the stand, real friendly, and he said nobody had ever asked him to switch. He's trying paper next month. If you've had luck getting a local business to change something small like that, how did you bring it up without sounding like a nag?
41 straws in one bag is wild. I used to roll my eyes at people who bugged small shops about this stuff, figured it was make-work and the owner would just get annoyed. Then I read a piece about how much of the trash on our beaches comes from food stands right at the sand, and it hit me that the guy at the counter probably just never thought about it. Sounds like you already proved that, since he's trying paper next month without any pushback.
