A stylist in Reno fixed my flat iron mistake in 5 minutes

I was getting a trim at a salon in Reno and mentioned my hair felt crunchy at the ends, so she asked what heat setting I used. Turns out I had been flat ironing at 450 for like 2 years on fine hair, and she told me to drop to 300 and always use a heat spray. My ends stopped snapping off after about 6 weeks, has anyone else fried their hair with high heat and had to start over?
