Expensive torque wrenches seemed silly until I messed up a carbon fork.
I always went by feel with aluminum bikes. A stripped carbon steerer made me buy a proper torque wrench.

You mentioned messing up a carbon fork, but honestly, aluminum parts need the right torque too. It's just that carbon fails in a scarier way when you get it wrong.

Yeah, it's like how we pay way more attention to big, dramatic failures but ignore the slow creep of small mistakes. Carbon snaps and it's terrifying, but aluminum just wears out quietly from being a little off over and over. The stuff that slowly gets worse is what really gets you in the end.
