Three years of creaking bottom brackets and it was the freehub the whole time
Three years back I started chasing a creak on my 2017 cross bike and threw parts at it for months. I swapped the bottom bracket twice, pulled and greased the seatpost, did the chainring bolts, even pressed in new bearings after a shop in Grand Rapids quoted me $120 for the job. Every time I thought I had it, the noise came back on steep climbs about 3 miles in. Last week I finally took the rear wheel off and the freehub body was bone dry with a little rust in the pawls. Cleaned it, packed it with a light grease, and I put 40 miles on it this weekend with zero noise. I feel like a dummy for not pulling the wheel first, so what's your go-to order for tracking down a mystery creak?
