Unpopular opinion: I used to hate adjusting cup and cone bearings
Thought it was a pointless old-school chore until I over-tightened a cartridge bearing and had to explain why the wheel wouldn't spin to a very confused kid. Now I see the charm in getting them just right.

Read a forum post where a guy said he keeps a vintage cup and cone hub going with just a 15mm wrench and some grease. His modern bike with cartridge bearings needed a whole new rear hub after a bad season. That really stuck with me. It's not just about fixing stuff, it's about keeping things alive on your own terms. There's a real pride in that. Makes me want to learn how to do it right.

Bicycle Quarterly ran a piece last year arguing cup and cone hubs last decades if you don't mess up the adjustment. Your cartridge bearing story is exactly why that skill isn't useless. I've seen guys in shops fix cup and cone play with a wrench and feel, while cartridge means buying a whole new unit. That control over the fix is why some folks stick with the old system. Once you learn it, getting that perfect roll is actually pretty gratifying.

Yeah @jakefox that makes total sense about having control. I see a similar thing out here, some of the older guys on the road can fix anything on their rig with just a couple basic tools. There's something about just wrenching on stuff yourself that gets the job done right.
