My rear rack bolts sheared off mid-commute on 5th Ave
I was riding through downtown Portland last Tuesday, about 2 miles from work, when my loaded pannier swung hard and the whole rack dropped onto my wheel. Turned out two of the four bolts had snapped from vibration, not from weight, and I hadn't checked them since installing the rack 11 months ago. Has anyone else had bolts fail like this, and do you use threadlocker or just retighten on a schedule?
Third bolt on my truck bed tool box did the same thing last spring. We were hauling paint buckets down I-5 and the whole box shifted sideways, almost took out a minivan next to me. The shop said it was loosening from the constant flexing on rough roads. I never checked it either, just put it on and forgot about it for a couple years. Now I go over every bolt on the truck every oil change, takes five minutes with a socket wrench. Saved my ass twice since then.
