Pro tip: hawk decoys work way better than I expected

I put up one of those plastic hawk silhouettes near the big picture window last month after my third finch strike in a week. Turns out they actually fool real birds, I read a Cornell study that said they reduce strikes by up to 60 percent if placed right. Found that fact on the Audubon website while looking for DIY fixes. Anyone else have luck with decoys or did I just get lucky with my window placement?

My very first hawk decoy flew off the second story balcony in a light breeze and landed in the neighbor's kiddie pool, so I'd say you're way ahead of me on placement! I finally tacked mine down with some industrial velcro and now it's been three months without a single thump against the glass. The trick for me was moving it around every couple weeks because the local sparrows seemed to catch on after a while, maybe they held a meeting about the suspicious plastic predator?

Honestly, moving the decoy around every couple weeks is a solid call, I did the same thing after my local crows started ignoring it. I strapped mine to the balcony railing with zip ties and that kept it steady through some pretty windy days. Tbh the birds seem to buy it longer when you switch up the spot and angle every now and then.
