Took me 6 years to realize I was mounting my bird feeders too close to the house

I used to put feeders right up against the dining room window so I could watch the birds up close. Thought that was smart. Then last spring I counted 14 window strikes in one month. A guy from the local Audubon chapter told me feeders need to be either within 3 feet of glass or way farther out, not in that middle zone where birds build up speed. Moved them about 25 feet into the yard and strikes dropped to maybe 2 a month. Anyone else make this same dumb mistake?

My buddy Dave did the exact same thing with his feeder right by his sliding glass door. He had a cardinal hit so hard it left a bird-shaped dust mark on the glass. He moved it about 15 feet out and hasn't had a strike since.

Man, I did the same thing except my feeder was basically glued to the window. Watched a sparrow bounce off the glass like a pinball. Thought I was being helpful putting it close so I could watch them. Nope, just setting up a tiny avian demolition derby. Moved mine about ten feet away and now the only thing hitting the glass is my forehead when I forget where the door is.
