A smith at the Wooster, Ohio show let me try his 2 inch rounding hammer and it fixed my drawing out
Drove out to the Wayne County show last month and spent most of the day watching a fella named Ray work. He handed me his 2 inch rounding hammer and told me to quit choking up on the handle. My drawing out got so much faster that I knocked out a set of tong reins in about 40 minutes when it usually takes me an hour and a half. Any of you run a lighter hammer for drawing out, or am I just late to this?
Choking up on the handle is the real trick here, not the hammer weight. A short grip kills your swing speed and you end up muscling the steel instead of letting the hammer do the work.
