Tried quenching in canola oil instead of my usual brine and the results made zero sense to me
I forged three 1084 blades in my garage in Boise this past weekend and quenched two in canola at 130 degrees and one in my old brine tank just to compare. The brine blade came out with a way more even hardness line than the oil ones, which goes against everything I read on the forums about oil being gentler and more consistent for simple carbon steel. Did I just get lucky with the brine or is there something about my oil setup I'm missing?
