Moved my grove of 12 saplings from compost barrels to grow bags, what a difference
I used to start all my young trees in those plastic nursery pots we had stacked in the shed. They dried out fast and the roots always circled the bottom, which was a pain when I finally transplanted them near the creek. Last month I tried 5-gallon fabric grow bags for a batch of red maples and the difference was night and day. The roots air-prune instead of tangling, and the soil stays moist way longer between waterings. Has anyone else switched to grow bags for bigger transplants, or do you stick with solid pots for the first year or two?
