Crawled an attic in July and found a nest of old RG-59 from the 80s

Was doing a rewire in a house built in '84. Pulled back the insulation and found a perfect coil of that old, thick cable. Must have been left by the original installer. The jacket was still soft, not brittle. Made me wonder how much of that stuff is still hidden in walls. Anyone else come across vintage installs like that?

A bakery tour in Portland made me rethink my sourdough starter schedule

I visited a small bakery called The Crusty Owl last month where the head baker told me she only feeds her starter once a week and keeps it in a cooler. I've always done daily feeds at room temp. She says her way builds more complex flavor, but I worry about it being strong enough. Has anyone else tried a weekly feed cycle and had good results?

The customer who wanted a 'see-through' wall

I was doing a storefront install in Toledo last month, and the owner kept asking if we could make the whole front wall 'disappear'. He literally said, 'I want people to walk right through it, like magic!' I had to explain, very slowly, that glass is still a solid object. He seemed genuinely disappointed we couldn't make a portal. Has anyone else had a client with expectations that defied basic physics?

Tried a different route in the Smokies last fall and it changed my whole trip

I've always done the same 20 mile loop from Newfound Gap, but last October I tried a new route starting from Big Creek. The old loop was crowded and mostly ridge walking, but the new one had way more water features and solitude. We saw maybe five other people in three days, and the campsites by the creeks were perfect. What's a trail you switched up that ended up being a lot better?

Thought I had my rigging perfect on a job in Tacoma

A sudden gust caught a steel beam I was setting and it started to spin. I had to lower it fast onto the pad and re-sling the whole thing. Anyone had to deal with a bad spin like that?

Appreciation post: a trick for stuck turbo bolts on a 6.7 Powerstroke

I was fighting a turbo swap on a 2015 F-250 last week, and the two lower bolts were just frozen. I was about to break out the torch, but a guy at the parts counter said to try a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF. Let it soak for an hour, hit it with an impact, and they came right out. Saved me a ton of time and a possible snapped bolt. Anyone have a different go-to for really stubborn exhaust hardware?

Shoutout to the old guy at the diner in Boise who taught me about coffee

Honestly, this was maybe ten years back. I was at this 24-hour spot called The Griddle after a long drive, just wanting a basic cup. The guy next to me, looked like he'd been there since the place opened, watched me dump three sugars in. He just said, 'You're killin' it, kid.' He asked the waitress for two mugs of their house brew, black. He made me try it, just sip it. Tbh, it was bitter, but he told me to hold it on my tongue for a second. He said, 'You gotta let it talk to you. It's got notes, not just heat.' I didn't get it then, but that moment stuck. Now I always taste my first sip plain. Anyone else have a simple tip that completely shifted how you drink your coffee?

Shoutout to the $8 immersion blender I grabbed on a whim

I was making a big pot of veggie soup last week, trying to use up some old carrots and potatoes. Normally I'd just leave it chunky, but I saw this cheap little stick blender at the store and figured, why not? It was only eight bucks. Let me tell you, it turned that whole pot into a smooth, creamy soup in about two minutes. I didn't have to transfer hot liquid to my regular blender, which always makes a mess. Now I'm using it for everything, like making quick sauces from pan drippings or blending oats into flour. That tiny thing made my cheap ingredients feel fancy and saved me so much time. Has anyone else found a super cheap kitchen tool that you now use all the time?

Finally figured out why my mortar was drying too fast in the sun

I was laying a small patio in my backyard yesterday and the mix kept getting crumbly after just a few minutes. My neighbor, who used to do masonry, walked over and pointed out I was mixing the whole bag at once instead of smaller batches. How do you guys handle mixing on hot days to keep it workable?

Talking to my uncle about his farm made me question the whole 'local food' thing

I was visiting family in Nebraska last weekend and my uncle, who runs a corn and soybean farm, asked why I always buy local. I told him it cuts down on shipping pollution. He pointed out his irrigation pumps run on diesel and his fertilizer comes from a factory 800 miles away. He said sometimes a big, efficient operation far away can actually be cleaner. It hit different because he's the one doing the work, not just talking about it. So, is local always better, or are we missing the bigger picture on farm emissions?
