Showerthought: I called cleanup a waste of time until a 40 minute render in Fort Worth taught me otherwise
Last week I made a low poly coffee mug with like 30,000 faces because I kept subdividing everything, and my laptop in Fort Worth took 40 minutes to render a single still for a class project. I used to think mesh cleanup and decimate were just stuff pros bragged about, so I skipped it. Then I tried the decimate modifier at 0.3 and the thing dropped to under 8,000 faces with almost no visible change on screen. I also merged a bunch of doubles with M and suddenly my edit mode stopped lagging when I rotated the view. It's not glamorous work but I've been doing a quick cleanup pass on every model before saving now. What's your go to move for cutting face count without wrecking the shape?
