I always assumed that if a game had a ton of ratings on BoardGameGeek, it meant people were actually playing it a lot. Last Saturday I was killing time at a game store in Sacramento waiting for my shift to start, and the owner pulled up a spreadsheet he keeps tracking his own collection. He had 87 games with 2,000 or more ratings, and when he sorted by logged plays, the median was something like 4 or 5 sessions per game. I was floored. I went home and checked my own shelf, and out of the 40 or so games I own, only 6 have hit double digit plays. It made me rethink why I keep buying new stuff when I barely touch half of what I already have. I think part of it is that hype threads and rating counts make a game feel essential even if it never hits the table again after game night. So now I'm curious, does anyone else track their actual play counts against their collection size?
