That critique about game weight during a meetup changed how I teach
A guy at my local game night in Columbus pointed out I was explaining too many edge cases upfront for Brass Birmingham. Now I just teach the core actions first and let people mess up on the first round, took 20 minutes off my setup time. Anyone else get roasted for over-explaining and had to adjust?

Yeah I had this exact thing happen with Viticulture. I used to lay out every single visitor card possibility before we even started and people would just zone out. Finally a buddy just said "dude let them play and screw up, that's how you learn." It was annoying but he was right. Now I teach the core loop and let the first game be a practice round basically. People pick it up way faster and they actually enjoy it more because they aren't drowning in information they don't need yet. Saves me a ton of time too.

Nah @perez.barbara, I totally disagree, skipping the rules upfront just leads to more confusion later.

Let them play and screw up" - that's the real golden rule right there. Over-explaining kills the fun before it even starts. A quick "here's how to win, good luck" beats a rules lecture every time.
