The 10-minute rule at game night split our group in half
Last month I started a timer for each player on their turn at our Thursday meetup in Portland, after one guy spent 40 minutes on a single move in Terraforming Mars. Half the group loved it, said it kept things moving and they got more plays in. The other half called it stressful and said it ruined the relaxed vibe we had for 3 years. I got quote from one angry member: "We're not playing chess against a clock, this is supposed to be fun." So which side are you on, do you enforce turn limits at your table or let people chew on their options as long as they want?
Had a buddy in Seattle who tried this with his group last year. He set a 5 minute timer for Twilight Imperium, and the whole thing fell apart by the third round. One guy just stopped talking and stared at the board until the timer went off, then made a random move and sat back with his arms crossed. The game ended early and two people never came back. He says now he just lets the table police itself, and if someone is taking forever, you say something out loud like "hey, we're all waiting on you" and that does the trick better than any clock.
