Rant: The foreman who called my weld "pretty but weak" still bugs me

Working a boiler job in Gary Indiana back in April, I had this old foreman named Vince walk up and look at my bead. He just said "that's pretty but it's weak" and walked off without explaining. I spent the whole shift trying to figure out what he meant, and finally asked him at lunch. He showed me how I was running too cold and moving too slow, which made it look nice but didn't penetrate deep. Has anyone else had a boss who gave criticism in a weird way like that?
