Took the 7018 class in Tulsa, finally get the hype
Been running stick for 4 years and always thought the 7018 hype was overblown. Took a 2-day class at Tulsa Welding School on vertical up technique. Instructor had me slow my travel speed way down and watch the puddle shape, not the arc. Night and day difference on my test plate. Anyone else had a specific trick that made 7018 click for them?
Watched my buddy Doug fight with 7018 for two years, blowing through rods and cussing every pass. He finally took a weekend class and the instructor told him to stop gripping the stinger like a hammer and instead hold it like a pencil, real loose. He also started counting to five after each drag step before moving. Came back Monday and his vertical beads looked like they were laid by a machine. He's still not great at it, but he passed his weld test for a pipeline gig off that one change. Funny how one dumb little fix does it.
