Vent: my helper spent 2 hours labeling every weld on a 40 foot vessel and I about lost it until I saw his chart
Last Tuesday we were finishing up a 40 foot pressure vessel out in Gary, Indiana, and my helper Marcus starts putting little paint marks next to every single weld seam. I'm watching this kid go down the whole shell and I'm thinking we are never gonna make the turnover. Took him a little over 2 hours and I was grumbling the whole time because our inspector was due at 4. Then he hands me this chart he made showing which welds were root passes, which were cap passes, and which ones he wasn't sure about. The inspector walked the vessel in about 20 minutes instead of the usual hour and a half, because he could spot the doubt marks right away and just hit those. Turned out 3 of the ones Marcus flagged needed a touch up, and we caught them before the hydro test instead of after. That chart saved us a full re-test and probably a day of rework. Now I want him doing it on every job, but I feel dumb asking after I gave him crap about it all afternoon. Any of you guys got a helper who came up with something smarter than your own system?
