My book club can't agree: Is 'The Road' hopeful or not?

Last month, my book club read 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy. Our discussion quickly turned into a heated debate. Several members argued that the father's love for his son shows a core of hope, even in bleak times. Others insisted the book is purely about despair, with no real light at the end. I found myself agreeing with both sides, which didn't help settle anything. One person got so frustrated they threatened to skip the next meeting. Now we're at a standstill, unsure how to pick our next book. How do other clubs handle these kinds of splits? Do you think there's a correct reading, or is it all up to personal taste?

Have you ever noticed how we always want stories to have a clear answer, even when life doesn't give us that? I see this pattern all over, where people fight over if something is purely good or bad instead of accepting the messy middle. Books like 'The Road' force us to hold both hope and despair at once, much like trying to find good in a hard day. Your club split because everyone brings their own past and pain into how they read. Maybe the point is to listen and learn from different views, not to pick a winner. How do we get better at sitting with questions that have no easy answers?

That messy middle you mentioned happens in every online fight too.
