Switched from discussing themes to talking about character flaws and our group split in half

We had a debate in our Austin book club about whether to focus on thematic analysis or dig into character motivations instead. I pushed for character flaws because I think they drive the story more, and it ended up with 3 people walking out after 45 minutes of arguing about The Great Gatsby. Has anyone else had a debate topic break their group apart like that?

Wait, y'all actually got people to walk out over Gatsby? That's wild. Honestly, the most dramatic thing that happened in my group was someone falling asleep during a discussion on symbolism.

Yeah I used to be all about themes but now I see how character flaws actually break things wide open though.
