After 7 years of stabbing myself, I finally switched to a press for leather covers
I used to hand-punch holes in thick veg-tan leather with an awl and a mallet, and every single cover ended up with crooked holes and at least one bloody thumb. Two weeks ago I caved and bought a secondhand book press with a drilling attachment off Craigslist for $85, and it punches clean, even holes in about 4 seconds flat. Has anyone else made this swap and found their hole spacing still looks off because of how the leather stretches, or is that just a me problem?
