My bone folder snapped mid-spine on a $200 rebind and I'm still mad about it
Cheap plastic one I'd had for 3 years gave out right as I was creasing the third signature last Tuesday, so I finished the whole thing with the back of a butter knife. Anyone got a folder that actually holds up, or am I just too rough on them?
That bit about finishing with the back of a butter knife is the real issue here, and it's not the one you think. Plastic folders don't just randomly snap, they snap because the stress builds up at the hinge point every time you press hard on a crease. A butter knife has a round spine, so it can't hold a sharp fold, and you end up pushing harder to make up for it. That extra force probably went right back into the plastic on your next project. Try a bone or teflon folder with a proper flat edge, and crease on a hard surface with even pressure instead of short hard pushes. The tool matters, but how you use it is what's been killing them.
