The retired binder in Portland who told me my spine rounding was backwards
I was at a workshop in Portland back in March and this older guy named Harold watched me round a spine for about 10 minutes before he walked over and said I was pushing the curve the wrong way from the shoulder. He showed me how he does it with his thumbs starting at the head and tail instead of the middle, and the difference in how the signatures sat was night and day. Been doing it his way ever since. Anyone else get taught head-to-tail instead of middle-out?
Nothing like a guy watching you screw up for 10 solid minutes before stepping in, Harold really let you marinate in your own mistakes. The head and tail trick makes sense though, the middle always wants to slide around and fight you. Sounds like Harold has been waiting years for someone to walk into that workshop and round a spine wrong just so he could save the day.
