Watch your PVA glue batch dates, I lost a whole text block last month

I bought a gallon of PVA from a supplier in Columbus back in January and finally cracked it open three weeks ago for a rebind on a 1930s dictionary. The glue looked fine, smelled fine, but it set up chalky and cracked along the spine after two days in the press. Turns out the batch was over a year old and had been sitting in a hot warehouse before it even shipped. Check the date on your jug before you commit a whole text block to it, and if there is no date, ask the supplier. Has anyone found a reliable way to test old stock before it wrecks a project?
