Met a woman at the arboretum who could name every oak by bark
Was at the Morton Arboretum last Saturday and this older lady just walked up while I was staring at two similar trees, pointed at the bark and said "that one's a bur oak, the ridges go deeper on the left side." She spent like 10 minutes showing me how the bark texture changes with age, and now I can't unsee it on every hike. Anyone else got a random stranger moment that completely changed how you look at plants?
That is such a cool thing to run into. I had something close happen with a guy on a trail who pointed out how you can tell a red oak from a black oak just by the leaves in fall, and it honestly stuck with me for years. I get why you can't unsee it now. Once someone hands you that kind of knowledge, every walk turns into a test and a little puzzle. It is weird how a total stranger can change the way you see something you walk past every day. Most people just don't take the time to share stuff like that, so when it happens it really lands.
