Deck mud vs. thin set for my fireplace hearth, thin set won this time
I spent last Saturday redoing my living room hearth and could not decide between deck mud and thin set mortar, so I went with a 1/2 inch thin set bed because the slab was pretty level already. It cured rock solid in 24 hours and I set the slate tiles right on top, but now I'm wondering if I should have used deck mud for better drainage under the raised lip? Has anyone else laid a hearth with straight thin set and had it crack later?
