Master mason's one line about my corners stuck with me for years

I was laying a fireplace in Newark a few springs back and this old guy watched me plumb the corners, then said "you're building walls, not measuring cups." I had been obsessing over getting every joint exactly 3/8 inch, focusing too much on the tape and not enough on how the whole face looked. Took me a while to relax and trust my eye first, then measure, and now I'm curious if other folks here got one piece of criticism that rewired their approach too?
