Stop buttering your brick ties before setting them, it does nothing
Saw a guy on a job in Tampa last month coating every tie in mortar like it was bread. That paste dries in 10 minutes and just makes the mortar slop off the joint. The rust grip does the work, not the dip. Anyone else see this on their sites or am I taking crazy pills?

Read a thread on a masonry forum a while back saying the same thing. Old timers used to dip em back when ties were bare steel and mortar was different stuff. Now they come galvanized or stainless with ribs made to bite. Dipping just fills those ribs with paste so there is nothing left to grab. Watched a crew in Ocala do it too, half their ties popped loose on a lintel a month later. The dip does nothing but waste time and mud.
