Debate: When a story prompt totally bombs on you, do you scrap it or try to fix it?

I was writing this horror prompt about a cursed vending machine last week. Got about 300 words in and realized the whole idea was falling flat - no tension, characters felt like cardboard. I stared at the screen for 20 minutes trying to decide if I should trash it all or keep pushing through. What do you guys do when a prompt goes sideways on you? Do you force yourself to finish it or just move on to something else?

Rant: My $350 water softener install turned into a disaster

I paid a guy named Hector from a Craigslist ad to install a water softener in my house near Juan Tabo. He said it would be $350 total, but he busted a pipe in my crawlspace and left without fixing it. Now I'm looking at a $900 plumber bill and wondering if anyone has a local company they actually trust for this kind of work.

Warning: My $50 infrared thermometer was way off on my furnace ducts

I bought a cheap infrared thermometer from Amazon to check my heat registers in Calgary last month. One room showed 60 degrees while another was 85, so I thought my furnace was totally out of balance. Turns out the cheap sensor reads shiny metal surfaces wrong by almost 20 degrees, and the ductwork was actually fine. Has anyone else found big differences between IR thermometers and probe thermometers for HVAC work in Alberta homes?

Just found out how much mortar joints actually breathes

Was reading through an old bricklaying manual from the 1920s I found at a flea market near Flint last weekend, and it said mortar joints let out like 90% of the moisture in a wall over time. Blew my mind because I always thought the bricks themselves did all the drying. Anybody else ever come across weird old trade facts that changed how you work?

Got caught in a downpour on the Springwater Corridor trail and had a total gear wakeup

I used to think fenders were optional extras for fancy riders, not something I needed. Last Tuesday I was 6 miles from home on the Springwater Corridor when the sky just opened up. By the time I got to work my entire back was soaked through with that nasty road spray, and my backpack felt like a wet towel. A guy at the coffee shop near the trailhead saw me squeezing out my shirt and told me about his $30 set of SKS Raceblades that take 5 minutes to put on. Now I own a pair and I actually get to work dry even when it's dumping rain. Anyone else had a specific crappy ride that made them finally buy gear they were avoiding?

Met a guy at the Brown Line who taught me about my neighborhood's history

Last Tuesday I was waiting at the Belmont stop and this older guy next to me starts pointing at a building down the street. He told me it used to be a jazz club in the 1920s where Louis Armstrong supposedly played once. I've walked past that place for 3 years and never knew. Has anyone else had a random stranger drop some wild Chicago history on them?

Had a cashier at a truck stop grill me about my 'Keep Your Eyes on the Road' sticker design

She said the font was too small for any real impact and that I should make the letters bolder so people can actually read it at highway speeds. Anyone else get random design feedback from strangers that actually made you rethink your whole approach?

I finally had a torque wrench fail on me mid-job and it was a nightmare

I was in the hangar at PDX last Tuesday working on a flap track on a 737 when my torque wrench just went limp. Like I'm putting normal pressure on it and it clicks way too early, no resistance at all. I pulled it off and checked the calibration tag and it was 8 months overdue for service, totally my fault for not checking. So now I've got a half-tightened bolt and no idea if the other fasteners are torqued right from earlier that day. Ended up having to re-torque every single bolt on that track with a borrowed wrench from the next bay over, which added an extra 2 hours to the job and put me way behind. Has anyone else had a tool crap out at the worst possible time like that?

Finally hit a clean fade on my third try this morning

I've been practicing on mannequins for like 6 weeks and could never get the blend smooth near the parietal ridge. This morning something just clicked and it came out even with no harsh lines. Anyone else have those random breakthrough moments where it just works?

My mentor told me to use a trimmer for baby hairs and I ignored her for 6 months

I thought I knew better than my old boss at Shear Perfection in Austin because I watched some YouTube guru who said clippers were fine. So I kept using my Andis clippers on those fine baby hairs around the nape and getting these random patches. Finally tried her method with my T-outliner last week and the difference is insane - no more spotting or uneven lines. Why did I waste half a year being stubborn? Has anyone else had a senior stylist's advice turn out to be totally right after you fought it for a while?
