Stopped using a trowel for buttering, switched to a hawk and it sped me up on a row house in Baltimore
Honestly, I used to butter every brick with a trowel one at a time, takes forever on a tight line. About 4 months ago I had a job on a three story row house in Baltimore with a crew chief who yelled at me, 'use the hawk like you mean it.' I switched to loading the hawk flat and flicking mortar onto the brick with the edge, not scooping it. Now my bedding and cross joints come out way more even, and I cut maybe 20 minutes off each 10 foot run. The trick is keeping the hawk steady and not overloading it past about 8 bricks worth. Has anyone else made that switch and noticed their wrist hurting less by the end of the day?
