Garage sale lady in Tacoma sold me a $4 wool coat and told me dry cleaning was a scam
I used to drop $30 at the dry cleaner every time I found a nice wool blazer at Goodwill, and I figured that was just the cost of looking classy on a budget. Last Saturday a woman in Tacoma running a garage sale watched me hesitate over a $4 wool coat because it smelled like cedar and asked why I looked worried. When I said I would need to get it cleaned, she laughed and said dry cleaning is mostly a scam, then walked me through brushing it out and freezing it in a bag overnight for moths. The coat looks great now and I have not paid a cleaner since. Does anyone else think we are way too scared of cleaning wool at home, or is there something I am missing?
Man I feel this. I have ruined a wool sweater before by tossing it in the wash, so I get why people are scared, but that fear cost me years of paying cleaners for stuff I could have handled myself. That lady in Tacoma is onto something. The freezer trick works for moths and the smell usually fades once you air it out for a day or two. Wool is tougher than we give it credit for. You just have to be patient with it instead of panicking and running to the cleaner every time.
