My neighbor caught me scrubbing my cast iron with soap and had to sit me down

I was cleaning my thrifted Lodge skillet in the driveway last Saturday when Mrs. Patterson from three doors down marched over in her slippers. She told me I was stripping all that seasoning I'd built up over 6 months, then walked me through her method with coarse salt and a potato. Now I spend 15 bucks a year on canola oil instead of buying expensive nonstick pans every spring. Has anyone else gotten roasted by an older person over kitchen care?

Watched my grandma do the same thing to my uncle when he tried to wash her cast iron with dish soap. She grabbed the salt and a rag right out of the drawer and showed him how to scrub it without ruining the patina. Honestly, switching to salt and oil changed everything for me too, and now my pan is nonstick enough to fry eggs without butter. Ngl, I felt a little dumb at first but it's way better than buying nonstick pans that scratch up in a year.
