inMorning loop versus evening route, no contest after last Tuesday
Ha! Evening walks turn every dog into a wild animal. Mine would trade me for one good goose chase.

inBatteries in my pickup bucket died at hour 2 of a 5 hour cleanup shift
Two hours is nothing, that headlamp dying on you is on you not the battery. A decent 18650 cell runs 4 to 6 hours on low and costs 8 bucks, so bringing one spare means you are covered the whole shift. I have done 6 hour night cleanups on the rocks at Davenport with two cells in a ziplock in my chest pocket sweat has never killed one yet. Sand is only a problem if you bury your bag in it, which is a choice, not a law. Learn your gear before you blame it.

inWhy does nobody talk about choosing to run my van without a ladder rack for 6 months
Six months is not really "choosing to run without one" though, that's just how long it takes to save up for a decent one or find a used one on marketplace. I ran my E150 bare for almost a year and honestly the only thing I missed was hauling long stuff like conduit and lumber. After a while you just get used to sliding pipe through the back doors and tying the flag on it. The real trick is a couple of pool noodles on the roof edge so you don't scratch the paint loading up there.
