My neighbor told me my table linens looked like a funeral dirge

She was blunt about it, but she had a point. I always grabbed the cheapest white cloth napkins and tablecloths at Walmart, thinking neutral was safe. She showed me how a bright yellow thrifted tablecloth for $3 can completely change the feel of a dinner. Now I hit estate sales on Saturday mornings and pick up colorful linens for next to nothing. Anyone else have a friend who gave you a style reality check?

Estate sales are a goldmine for this stuff, seriously. But you mentioned grabbing the cheapest white linens at Walmart, and I just gotta say, white is actually a classic and can work really well if the fabric and texture are right. It's not always about avoiding white, it's about avoiding the sad, thin, synthetic kind that looks like a tablecloth for a hospital cafeteria. Your neighbor did steer you right with the bright colors though, thrifted finds always have way more personality than anything off a big box shelf.
