Rant: My friend told me my thrift store outfits looked 'costumey'

I used to buy whatever looked cool at the Goodwill in Portland - lots of bright patterns and weird cuts. My friend finally said I looked like I was going to a themed party every day. So I started focusing on basics like plain blazers and neutral colored pants instead. Now I pick one statement piece per outfit, like a bold scarf or a vintage belt, and keep everything else simple. It saves me money since I buy fewer wild items and my clothes actually match better. Has anyone else had to tone down their thrift finds after getting feedback?

Reminds me of when I tried to impress a date by wearing a vintage cowboy shirt with pearl snaps and she asked if I was in a band... I was not in a band.

Exactly. The quiet stuff makes the loud stuff pop. I learned that the hard way. Used to layer every possible effect on my builds. Looked like a mess. Now I pick one or two small accents. Everything else stays clean and simple. Lets the eye rest somewhere. That contrast is everything.
