Thrift store plates made me eat slower
Bought a set of mismatched china plates for $6 about a month ago. They're heavier than my regular ones so I'm taking smaller portions and actually chewing instead of shoveling. Has anyone else noticed their habits change just from swapping out basic kitchen stuff?

I heard some food blogger say heavy plates trick your brain into thinking you're eating more, which makes total sense with the smaller portions thing. The weight must be telling your hands "this is a real meal" even when the plate isn't piled high.

OH for SURE, YES! You just hit on something I've ALWAYS believed. It's not just about the weight either, it's the whole feel of the plate. A heavy, solid ceramic plate just FEELS more substantial than a flimsy plastic one. So your brain gets that visual cue of the small portion, but the weight in your hand is like "whoa, this is a REAL meal," and it actually helps you feel satisfied faster. I bet that's why fancy restaurants use those thick, heavy plates even though they're a total pain to wash. It's a little psychological trick that really works.
