Spice packets are why my grocery bill kept climbing
For years I grabbed those 99 cent taco and chili seasoning envelopes every week. Then my sister visited and watched me cook ground beef with one, and she pointed out the price per pound of just cumin, paprika, and garlic powder from the bulk bins. She showed me her little jars she refills for maybe 15 cents per meal. I did the math on my last receipt and saw I spent like $11 on seasoning packets in one month for three dinners. Now I keep five basic spices in my cabinet and mix my own in a old yogurt container. I mean, it still tastes the same to me, so why did I never question those tiny foil packs? Has anyone else made this swap and actually noticed a difference in their weekly totals?
But is saving a few bucks a month really worth losing the convenience of just ripping open a packet when you're tired after work? I'll take the 15 extra seconds of flavor mixing over dirtying a bunch of spice jars any day.
