I had to choose between fresh herbs or a jar of sauce for a pasta dish last night

I was making a simple pasta with what I had, and my choice came down to buying a small bunch of fresh basil for $3.50 or a jar of marinara for $2.75. I went with the jar because it was cheaper and I could use it for more than one meal. To make it better, I slowly cooked a chopped onion and two cloves of garlic I already had in oil until they were soft, then added the jarred sauce. Letting it simmer for about 20 minutes on low heat really helped the flavors come together. The dish turned out great and felt more homemade than just plain sauce from the jar. It fed my family of three with enough left for my lunch today. Has anyone else found a good way to dress up a basic jarred sauce without spending much more?

Remember when I thought magnet trays were just for show? Lost a socket down a radiator fan shroud and spent an hour fishing it out. Now I keep one stuck to anything metal nearby. It just works.

My mug collection was out of control until I picked the ones I reach for every morning

Totally get that! I had the same problem with a box of my mom's old teacups. My fix was to pick just two special ones I really love and actually use them. The rest I took pictures of and let go. Now I have a fancy coffee on the porch sometimes without a cabinet full of dust collectors. It's about keeping the feeling, not every single item.

A chat with my uncle about his 'cheap' chili made me rethink my whole grocery list

Yeah, I bought two cans of that brand last year. I always thought making chili from scratch was too much work. But then my friend made a pot using just ground beef, a few spices from her cabinet, and a can of tomatoes. It tasted way better and only took about 30 minutes. I haven't touched a starter can since.
