I skipped travel insurance for 12 years to save $30 a trip, then a $340 clinic bill in Cusco changed my mind
I always figured the odds were on my side, so I kept pocketing that money and rolling the dice on every trip. When I got food poisoning in Peru and paid out of pocket at a clinic, a guy waiting next to me mentioned his policy covered the whole visit for $22 upfront. Does anyone have a cheap yearly plan they actually trust, or do you still skip it and hope for the best?
Why pay for a yearly plan just to maybe break even? You did the math for 12 years and it worked out fine, one $340 bill doesn't wipe out all that saved cash. If you added up your $30 a trip over those 12 years you probably banked way more than one clinic visit costs. Insurance companies make money because most people never file a claim, so the odds are literally built in their favor. Paying $22 upfront sounds great until you count the trips where nothing happens and that money is just gone. Keep rolling the dice, you already proved the system works for you.
