Switched from hostels to couchsurfing after a rainy night in Dublin
I used to book hostels for every trip, thinking it was the cheapest option. Then I got stuck in Dublin last March with no hostel beds left anywhere under 50 euros a night. A local I met at a pub offered his couch and it was free. Now I've done 8 couchsurfing stays in 6 months and only paid for accommodation twice. The trade off is less privacy but you get local tips you can't find online. Has anyone else found couchsurfing better than hostels for saving cash?

That rainy Dublin night got me too, ended up crashing on a guy's floor after all hostels were full. Saved maybe 200 bucks that week and found a killer pub tour guide.

Think about how much more you learn about a city when you stay with someone who lives there, not just where the cheap drinks are but what's actually worth your time. Is a free couch really saving money if you end up spending more because a local dragged you to random events you would have never found on your own?
