Switching to a small bag for short trips cut my costs big time

I always packed a full suitcase, even for weekends. After seeing the fees for checked bags, I tried using just a carry-on. Now I save money every trip and move around easier.

Yeah, when @lilyw87 says most of us can pack light, that's true for a simple weekend. But it kind of misses how messy travel actually gets. I've got friends who have to bring medical stuff, or people going camping who need a sleeping bag, and that just won't fit in a tiny bag. The fee itself isn't the crazy part, it's that it hits people who aren't just over-packing clothes the hardest. So the saving money part is a cool bonus for easy trips, but it's not some one-size-fits-all solution.

Took the airlines basically charging us for air to finally figure that one out. Remember stuffing a giant suitcase for two days like we were moving countries. That first time you see the checked bag fee on the screen is a real slap in the face. Now it's almost a game to see how little you actually need. They're probably mad we caught on to their little money grab.

Baggage fees are nothing new, people have been complaining about them forever. It's not some secret scheme, airlines just charge for extra services. Saving a few bucks on a trip is nice, but acting like it's a life hack is a bit much. Most of us can afford to pack light without turning it into a moral victory. The real issue is if you're traveling with kids or need special gear, then it gets complicated.
